Aposites Pascoe, 1865: 363. Type species: Aposites macilentus Pascoe, 1865.

Diagnosis

Small to medium-sized, brown or almost black beetles with serrate antennae extending beyond elytral apices in males. Frontoclypeus quadrate to weakly elongate. Gland opening at base of mandibles absent. Eyes large, coarsely facetted and deeply emarginate, narrowly separated ventrally. Antennal tubercles separated, removed from mandibular articulation. Antennal foramen elevated, with external articulation. Antennal scape weakly expanded toward apex, distinctly shorter than pronotum; pedicel transverse; antennomere 3 longer than scape. Pronotum as long as or longer than wide, lateral margins smooth or with median angulation; pronotal disc without nodules. Prosternal process very narrow. Procoxal cavities transverse with broad lateral extensions exposing protrochantins; open externally. Procoxae strongly projecting below prosternal process. Mesoventrite flat anteriorly; mesoventral intercoxal process rounded apically. Mesocoxal cavities narrowly separated medially, broadly open to mesepimeron; mesotrochantin exposed. Elytra with punctures but not in striae; 3 costae visible; apices variable.

Distribution and Biology

Aposites is an endemic and widely distributed genus known from all Australian states and territories except for Tasmania.

Adults have been collected at light from October to April in dry sclerophyll or mallee areas.
