Generic diagnosis

Female macropterous. Head long with large eyes; maxillary palps 3-segmented; ocellar setae pair I absent, III long and arising within the triangle on the tangent between the anterior margins of the posterior ocelli; 5 pairs of postocular setae, pair III unusually long. Antennae 8-segmented, segment I with paired dorso-apical setae; III and IV with forked sense cone; III–VI with microtrichial rows on both surfaces. Pronotum without sculpture, narrowed at anterior angles; posterior margin with one pair of setae, 2 pairs of posteroangular setae. Mesonotum with anterior campaniform sensilla; median setae arise in front of margin. Metanotum irregularly reticulate, median setae near anterior margin; campaniform sensilla present. Fore wing first vein setal row discontinuous, second vein row continuous; clavus with 5 veinal and one discal setae. Prosternum without discal setae, ferna broad and not divided, prosternal spinasternum broad. Mesosternum and metasternum with spinula. Mid and hind tarsi 2-segmented. Tergites II–VII without craspeda or ctenidia; VIII with long, regular comb; IX with anterior campaniform sensilla; X with almost complete longitudinal split. Sternite VII with only 2 pairs of marginal setae.
Male not known.

Relationship data

Thripidae sub-family Thripinae: this is a diverse group involving more than 230 genera. In general appearance the single species in this genus looks very like a member of Taeniothrips, but the first antennal segment has a pair of dorso-apical setae, the posterior margin of the pronotum bears a single pair of setae, and the posterior margin of sternite VII has only two pairs of setae.

Distribution data

Described from a single female collected in Java, five females were subsequently collected in Southern China (Zhang et al. 2018).

Nomenclatural data

Moundinothrips Bhatti, 1999: 9. Replacement name for Moundothrips Bhatti, 1995: 65 [homonym of Moundothrips Wilson, 1975], type species Moundothrips robustus Bhatti, 1995, by monotypy.

Only one species is recognised in this genus (ThripsWiki 2018), and this is recorded from China:
