Generic diagnosis

Female macropterous. Body surface with many closely spaced transverse striae. Head with cheeks weakly constricted behind eyes; maxillary palps 3-segmented; eyes with no pigmented facets; ocellar setae I absent, pair III long and stout on anterior margins of triangle; 5 pairs of small postocular setae in a row close to posterior margin of eyes. Antennae 8-segmented, segment I with one dorso-apical seta, III and IV with sense cone long, forked, extending to mid-point of next segment; III without microtrichia, IV with microtrichia on ventral surface, V–VI with microtrichia on both surfaces; VII and VIII slender. Pronotum with 4 pairs of posteromarginal setae, 2 pairs of posteroangular setae of which outer shorter than inner. Mesonotum with anterior campaniform sensilla; median setae near posterior margin. Metanotal median setae near anterior margin, campaniform sensilla present. Fore wing with setal rows widely spaced, clavus with 5 veinal and one discal setae. Prosternal basantra without setae, ferna weakly complete medially; prospinasternum broad and transverse. Mesosternum with sternopleural sutures complete; meso and metafurca without spinula. Mid and hind tarsi 2-segmented. Tergites II–VIII each with craspedum of small lobes, rounded or slightly dentate; IX with anterior campaniform sensilla, median dorsal setae short; X with no longitudinal split. Sternites with craspedum thin, translucent and difficult to observe; II with 2 pairs of marginal setae, III–VII with 3 pairs all arising at margin.
Male not known.

Relationship data

Thripidae sub-family Thripinae: this is a diverse group involving more than 230 genera. Amongst these, Striathrips shares with Bregmatothrips the presence of a single dorso-apical seta on the first antennal segment, and the presence of lobed craspeda on the posterior margin of the tergites.

Biological data

Each of the known specimens of this thrips has been taken from grasses.

Distribution data

Described from a single female taken in Queensland, northern Australia, four females of this species have recently been taken in Guangdong, southern China (Zhang, Wang, Li & Mound, 2018).

Only one species is known in this genus (ThripsWiki 2018), and this is now recorded from southern China:
