There are only
2 families of alderflies and dobsonflies found throughout the world
consisting of just 300 species. Both families are represented in
Australia, but only 26 species are present. In the past the members
of the Megaloptera have been included in Neuroptera. They are now
regarded as a separate order based on morphological differences
in the larval stages. The two families in this order are the Sialidae
known as alderflies and the Corydalidae known as the dobsonflies.
